New Indication for Oxaliplatin accepted by USP-DI.
The United States Pharmacopeia-Drug Information (USP-DI)/Thomson Micromedex recently published its acceptance of a new indication for oxaliplatin (Eloxatin). The USP-DI monograph for this drug has been revised to include the following off-label* use:
Oxaliplatin Accepted: Colon cancer, stage II, adjuvant treatment in combination with 5-fluorouracil/leucovorin. (Published 09/22/05)
*The term off-label refers to indications other than those reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and referenced on the FDA approved label. Off-label indications for drugs used in anticancer chemotherapeutic regimens must be covered by Medicare if they are accepted by the USP-DI.
ICD-9-CM Update. The following ICD-9-CM code V58.1 (Chemotherapy) has been removed and replaced by V58.11 (Encounter for Antineoplastic Chemotherapy) and V58.12 (Encounter for Immunotherapy for Neoplastic Condition). Some Carriers are revising their policies to reflect this change in codes. This change was effective as of 10/1/2005; please update your records.

CMA Sends Out Alert To Stop Medicare Cuts
The CMA has sent out a key contact ALERT asking all physicians to contact their Members of Congress and Senators to stop the Medicare payment cuts before they adjourn in a few weeks. Congress will adjourn in a month and they have yet to act to stop the 4.4% Medicare reimbursement rate cut set for January 1, 2006.
If the projected cuts are not stopped, payments will not keep pace with costs. Medicare rates will fall 26 percent, while physician practice costs rise 15 percent over five years. Health care funding in California is already among the lowest in the nation. Physicians have absorbed sharp cuts over recent years and they cannot sustain additional cuts. Private rates rank 30 percent below the national average, Medi-Cal rates rank last, and we have the highest number of uninsured. This difficult environment is driving many physicians out of medical practice in California. A recent UC Berkeley study showed that California’s aging physicians are not being replaced.
CMA needs all physicians to call your Members of Congress NOW!

COA Urges Immediate Action
Please contact your members of Congress and ask them to co-sponsor HR 4098 - The Community Cancer Care Preservation Act. Attached is a copy of the Bill as well as a summary. Also attached is a sample flyer that you can give to your staff, patients, and caregivers to contact their members. Simply modify it with the Congressional information for your practice. You can obtain members phone numbers by going to www.house.gov or using the Legislative Acton Center at the COA web site - www.communityoncology.org.
